If you have never looked at an astrology chart before, it can seem confusing. This guide will walk you through everything step by step, with simple examples.

Step 1: What IS a Birth Chart?

Imagine you take a photograph of the entire sky at the exact moment you were born. That photograph is your birth chart. It shows where every planet was at that moment. Astrologers believe these positions influence your personality, life events, and future.

Simple Example

If you were born on May 16, 1990 at 3:30 PM in Colombo, the chart captures exactly where the Sun, Moon, Mars, Jupiter, and all other planets were in the sky at that precise time and place. Someone born on the same day but at 8:00 AM in Kandy would have a different chart because the sky looked different at that time.

Step 2: The 12 Boxes (Houses)

The birth chart is drawn as a square diamond shape with 12 boxes. Each box is called a "house" and represents a different area of your life. In the South Indian chart style used by Kendera, the boxes stay in the same position -- what changes is which zodiac sign is in each box.

What each house means:

House 1 (Top-right corner): YOU -- your body, personality, appearance, and overall life direction. This is the most important house.
House 2: MONEY -- your wealth, family, speech, and what you value.
House 3: COURAGE -- siblings, short trips, communication, and bravery.
House 4: HOME -- your mother, home, property, vehicles, and happiness.
House 5: CHILDREN -- children, creativity, intelligence, and past-life karma.
House 6: CHALLENGES -- enemies, diseases, debts, and daily work.
House 7: PARTNERSHIP -- marriage, business partners, and open enemies.

House 9: LUCK -- father, religion, higher education, long travels, and fortune.
House 10: CAREER -- your profession, fame, status, and achievements.

South Indian Chart Layout (fixed positions):

House 1 is always the top-right diamond. The sign in House 1 is your Ascendant (Lagna).

Step 3: The Ascendant (Lagna) -- Your Starting Point

The Ascendant (called "Lagna" in Sinhala) is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of your birth. It is the MOST important factor in your chart because it determines which sign goes into which house.

Example: Ascendant = Cancer (කර්කට)

If your Ascendant is Cancer, then Cancer goes in House 1. The signs follow in order around the chart:

This means your career house (10) is Aries, your marriage house (7) is Capricorn, and your money house (2) is Leo.

Tip: Two people born on the same day can have completely different charts if they were born at different times, because the Ascendant changes approximately every 2 hours!

Step 4: Where the Planets Are

Now look at which houses the planets are placed in. Each planet brings its own energy to the house it sits in.

What each planet represents:

Sun (සූර්ය): Soul, father, authority, government, vitality, ego, and leadership.
Moon (චන්ද්‍ර): Mind, mother, emotions, feelings, and mental peace.
Mars (අඟහරු): Energy, courage, property, siblings, aggression, and action.
Mercury (බුධ): Intelligence, communication, business, education, and humor.
Jupiter (බ්‍රහස්පති): Wisdom, children, religion, wealth, expansion, and good fortune. The most beneficial planet.
Venus (සිකුරු): Love, beauty, marriage, art, luxury, and comfort.
Saturn (ශනි): Discipline, delay, hard work, old age, service, and karma. Brings lessons through challenges.
Rahu (රාහු): Obsession, foreign things, illusions, ambition, and unexpected events. A shadow planet.
Ketu (කේතු): Spirituality, detachment, past lives, confusion, and liberation. A shadow planet.

Example: Reading Planet Placements

Jupiter in House 10 (Career): Jupiter is the planet of wisdom and expansion. House 10 is career. This person will likely have a successful career, possibly in teaching, law, religion, or advisory roles. They are respected at work and may achieve high positions.

Saturn in House 7 (Marriage): Saturn brings delay and seriousness. House 7 is marriage. This person may marry later in life, or their spouse may be older or very serious/responsible. The marriage will require work but can be stable and long-lasting.

Moon in House 4 (Home): Moon represents emotions and mother. House 4 is home and mother. This person is deeply attached to their mother and home. They find emotional comfort in their living space. They may own property.

Step 5: The Zodiac Signs -- The "Flavor" of Each House

Each house contains a zodiac sign. The sign modifies how the house "behaves." Think of the house as the room and the sign as the decoration in that room.

The 12 signs and their basic nature:

Aries (මේෂ): Fiery, bold, impulsive, leader-like. Fast action.
Taurus (වෘෂභ): Earthy, stable, material, stubborn. Slow but steady.
Gemini (මිථුන): Airy, communicative, curious, versatile. Two-faced or multi-talented.
Cancer (කර්කට): Watery, emotional, nurturing, home-loving. Sensitive.

Pisces in House 7 (Marriage): Pisces is dreamy and spiritual. In the marriage house, this person seeks a spiritual or deeply emotional connection with their partner. They may idealize their spouse.

Step 6: Putting It All Together -- A Complete Example

Let's read a sample chart step by step:

Key placements:

- Sun in House 12 (in Taurus)
- Moon in House 3 (in Leo)

Reading:

1. Ascendant Gemini: This person is communicative, curious, and adaptable. They likely have many interests and are good at talking to people. Gemini rising gives a youthful appearance.

2. Sun in House 12: The Sun represents the soul and father. House 12 is foreign lands and spirituality. This person may live abroad or have a strong spiritual inclination. They may work behind the scenes rather than seeking the spotlight. Their father may have been distant or foreign-connected.

3. Moon in House 3: The Moon is the mind and emotions. House 3 is courage and communication. This person is emotionally expressive, brave, and good at writing or speaking. They have a close relationship with siblings.

4. Jupiter in House 7: Jupiter is wisdom and expansion. House 7 is marriage. This is an EXCELLENT placement! The person will likely have a wise, generous, and possibly wealthy spouse. Marriage brings good fortune. The spouse may be from a different culture or be well-educated.

5. Saturn in House 9: Saturn is discipline and delay. House 9 is luck and father. This person may have had a strict father or difficult relationship with him. Their luck comes through hard work, not chance. They may study deeply or have a serious approach to religion/philosophy.

Step 7: What About Dasha? (Planetary Time Periods)

Dasha is a unique feature of Vedic astrology. It tells you WHEN things will happen. Even if you have great planets in great houses, they only deliver results during their Dasha period.

How Dasha Works

Imagine your chart is a house with many rooms. Dasha tells you which room you are currently "in."

- If you are running Jupiter Dasha and Jupiter is in your 7th house (marriage), this is the period when marriage-related events will happen.

- If you are running Saturn Dasha and Saturn is in your 6th house (challenges), this period may bring health issues, legal problems, or hard work.

- Each major Dasha (Mahadasha) lasts from 6 to 20 years. Within each Mahadasha, there are sub-periods (Antardasha) that give more specific timing.

Quick Start: If you are new to astrology, start by looking at: (1) Your Ascendant sign, (2) Where your Moon is placed, (3) Which Dasha you are currently running. These three things give you the biggest picture.

Step 8: Common Questions Beginners Ask

"Is my chart good or bad?"

No chart is entirely good or bad. Every chart has strengths and challenges. Even difficult placements teach valuable lessons. Look for the positive yogas and strong houses -- everyone has them.

"What if I don't know my exact birth time?"

The Ascendant changes every ~2 hours, so even a 15-minute difference can change your chart significantly. If you don't know your exact time, the planetary signs will still be mostly correct, but the house placements may be wrong. Try to get your birth certificate or ask family members.

"Can astrology predict exact events?"

Astrology shows tendencies, probabilities, and timing windows -- not exact certainties. It can say "this is a favorable period for marriage" but cannot say "you will marry on June 15th." Free will and personal choices always matter.

"What are Rahu and Ketu? They sound scary!"

Rahu and Ketu are not physical planets -- they are mathematical points where the Moon's orbit crosses the Sun's path (called the lunar nodes). Rahu represents desire, ambition, and material growth.
